IP, or Internet Protocol, video systems are video security systems that work primarily by transmitting data and images via Ethernet or Wi-Fi as opposed to analog coaxial cabling. For this reason, HD (Hi-Definition) images are attained much more easily. The main advantage afforded here, despite the possible confusion for folks who are used to analog systems, is simplicity and self-containment. All that’s really needed for an IP Security system is an IP-enabled camera, a high-speed internet connection – DSL, Broad Band or Fiber is optimal –a router and Ethernet cable. Other than that, the only necessary component of hardware, obviously, would be a computer through which to both remotely control and view the camera.
The advantages afforded by IP systems would have been the stuff of science fiction mere decades ago, and even after these systems were initially available they remained prohibitively expensive for quite some time. The required technology is both ubiquitous and relatively inexpensive. Versatility is the name of the game here, and IP systems deliver on this front and more. For starters, the cameras themselves send data in a variety of ways, either via Ethernet or Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi enables the security-conscious to set up a fully integrated, multiple-camera system without the hassle and expense of running hundreds of feet of cable throughout your business, home, or secure property. That alone is enough to convince most owners to go this route, but as we’ll see, the perks don’t stop there.

- Network Video Recorder (NVR) can be located at a different location: This ability gives the system the power to record events at your house, office and your vacation property all on one device that is safe from being tampered with or destroyed. Only requires a secure internet connection at both locations.
- Remote Viewing: NVRs have the ability to be viewed with cell phones, PCs or tablets.
As we’ve seen, IP camera security systems are a decidedly slick and versatile means of keeping an eye on your residential or business property and able to fit just about any budget and security need. It’s definitely a user-friendly system, giving the security-conscious more options to design their own custom system at a fraction of the cost from just a few years ago.
